Embracing Tradition: A Pongal Celebration Filled with Joy and Learning

In January 2017, Deepam Foundation took a step beyond education and empowerment to provide the children with an immersive cultural experience — one that would stay with them for years to come. Mr. Velayutham, a dedicated team member of Deepam, organized a vibrant Pongal celebration in his village, giving the children an opportunity to engage with and learn about one of Tamil Nadu’s most cherished festivals.

Pongal is a time of thanksgiving, where families come together to celebrate the harvest and the rich cultural heritage of the region. It’s a festival brimming with traditional games, folk music, dances, and, of course, an elaborate feast of freshly prepared Pongal — a dish that symbolizes prosperity and unity.

For the children, this event was a window into a world of tradition they might have never experienced otherwise.
